Periódico estadounidense, el más antiguo de la nación.

Desde su nacimiento en 1851 ha rehuido del sensacionalismo y apelado a los lectores más ilustrados. Desde 1896 su nuevo propietario, Adolph Ochs, lo convirtió en un periódico más respetado internacionalmente. Su prestigio se fortaleció notoriamente a raíz de la cobertura del hundimiento del Titanic y las dos guerras mundiales. En la década de 1970 se vio envuelto en una controversia por haber publicado los papeles del Pentágono y, años más tarde, bajo la égida del nieto de Ochs, Arthur Ochs Sulzberger, tanto la organización como el personal experimentaron cambios radicales, en un proceso que incluyó la introducción de una edición nacional impresa en regiones. Hoy es probablemente el periódico más respetado e influyente del mundo y el baluarte de The New York Times Co., cuyos intereses comerciales comprenden otros diarios (particularmente el Boston Globe), revistas y medios electrónicos y audiovisuales.
